María Fernanda Sosa Rojas from Cozumel will attempt to climb Pico de Orizaba, located in Veracruz, early next week as a personal challenge.

The 25-year-old, who last year became the first woman to run around the island with a time of 9 hours, 14 minutes, and 29 seconds, will now seek to conquer the famous Citlaltépetl Volcano with an altitude of 5 1,636 meters above sea level, with a prominence of 4,922 meters in reference to Mount Logan, the second highest mountain in North America with 5,959 above sea level.

According to the intrepid athlete, it will be the first time that she will try to climb such a high mountain; on Sunday she traveled from Cozumel to Veracruz and began her climb to the summit at dawn on Tuesday, August 16.

Although her specialty is Trail Running, she feels that she has gained experience with the subject of heights and although she said she was not confident, being her first time, she stated that there are people who live in the mountains and cannot reach the summit, but she personally believes that she is prepared to achieve her objective; her main motivation is her family and friends.
