PC issues recommendations in case volcanic ash reaches Córdoba

Córdoba, Ver.- Given the forecasts that part of the volcanic ash emitted in the last hours by the Popocatépetl volcano could reach Veracruz, the head of the Municipal Coordination of Civil Protection of Córdoba, Jorge Tress Martínez urges the population to take preventive measurements.

“We have been in contact with the National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED) and based on its National Risk Atlas, the possibility of abundant ash fall in this city is minimal, but we must take preventive measures”, comments the interviewee.

He points out that the first thing is to learn to identify volcanic ash among the ash that could be generated in this area because it is highly sugarcane, in this sense, he details that the volcanic ash is of a sandier consistency and in a grayish tone, while the common ash is in tones blacks.

If there is a record of volcanic ash falling in the area, it is best not to wash it, but rather to sweep it and collect it to deposit it in the trash, because if it is washed it could go into the drainage system and could generate clogging.

What recommendations does PC issue about volcano ash?

In terms of health care, Tress Martínez emphasizes that it is best to resume the use of face masks to avoid inhaling this ash directly, as it could cause problems in people’s respiratory tracts, as well as closing doors and windows to prevent enter homes and workplaces.

He also details that it is important that citizens be attentive to the indications issued by competent authorities in matters of state civil protection, although he points out that the personnel under his charge will be monitoring the environment in the next few hours.

He emphasizes that it is not a matter of being alarmed, but of preventing further damage, although he insists that due to the distance that exists from the Popocatépetl volcano, if volcanic ash was to fall, it would be in smaller quantities than in other regions of the country.

It is worth remembering that during the last few hours Popocatépetl has had volcanic activity, mainly affecting nearby cities such as Puebla and Mexico City.
