Rains in recent weeks have ended the drought in Veracruz

Lluvias de las últimas semanas acabaron con sequía en Veracruz

The rains of the last few weeks in the state of Veracruz ended the drought that had affected the state of Veracruz since June, according to the monitoring of drought in Mexico carried out by the National Water Commission (CONAGUA). According to the report presented, no municipality in Veracruz is in a drought situation.

Despite the report, there are still 11 municipalities that are considered abnormally dry, which are: Benito Juárez, Chalma, Chiconamel, Chicontepec, Amatlán, Ixcatepec, Ixhuatlán de Madero, Platón Sánchez, Tantoyuca, Tempoal and Tepetzintla. Most of these are located in the north of the state of Veracruz, in the basins of the Pánuco River and the headwaters of Tuxpan.

The drought, according to the report of the specialized authorities, lasted for several months because the rainy season was delayed and, as a result, during the months of March to August, there were heat waves that generated an increase in forest fires.

Rains in recent weeks ended drought in Veracruz

By June of this year 2024, the 212 municipalities of the state were classified as abnormally dry: 23 of them had extreme drought and 37 suffered from exceptional drought, which represent the two highest degrees.

The recent rains affected the south of Veracruz, mainly, and caused rivers to rise, flood and puddle. However, the rainfall has helped end the drought problem throughout the state.

“In specific regions of the Gulf of Mexico, mainly in southern Veracruz, northern Oaxaca, Tabasco and the coasts of Quintana Roo, above-normal rainfall was recorded during the second half of October 2024.”

“Caused by the movement of tropical storm Nadine in interaction with a low-pressure channel located in the northeast, east and southeast of the country, maintaining a period of intense to torrential rainfall, as well as the entry of three frontal systems (No. 4-6), in addition to the arrival of three tropical waves (No. 28-30). These rains favored the elimination of moderate drought (D1) in Tabasco and the decrease of abnormally dry conditions (DO) in northern Oaxaca, Chiapas and southern Veracruz,” the report states.
