Yes, this way! Geological fault closes the Oaxaca-Veracruz highway; what is known about the alternate route?

A landslide and cracks in more than 100 meters of federal highway 175, Oaxaca-Veracruz, caused the closure of this road, which connects the Oaxacan capital with Tuxtepec. This section, located at kilometer 164+500 between Guelatao de Juárez and Santa Catarina Ixtepeji, has been closed since this week.

The Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) reported that the intense rains of October 2024, caused by Tropical Storm Nadine, weakened the embankment, generating the geological fault.

What are the alternative routes due to the closure of the Oaxaca-Veracruz highway?

A detour was enabled from kilometer 161 through the towns of San Juan Chicomezúchitl, San Miguel Amatlán and Santa Catarina Lachatao in the state of Oaxaca, connecting again with the federal highway at kilometer 175. However, this route increases the travel time by approximately one hour.

The transit of heavy or dangerous cargo vehicles is restricted due to the uneven conditions of the detour. Regarding this, Evelio Martínez, an affected transporter, indicated:

“The enabled accesses do not allow the passage of heavy trucks, and it has not been possible to supply the gas stations in the area.”

Not only traffic, the closure of the Oaxaca-Veracruz highway causes an impact on the supply of gasoline

Transporters report difficulties in supplying gas stations from Ixtlán de Juárez to Tuxtepec, a situation that worries the local population. Martínez added: “Between the three gas stations they can make a counterbalance, but it is urgent that access be reestablished.”
