A toxic fog has been shrouding the Gulf Coast Highway near the towns of Nanchital and Mundo Nuevo in Veracruz, prompting residents to block the route in protest. The blockade, which began over 15 hours ago, has caused traffic chaos as Tabasco residents, ADO drivers, and public transportation companies are forced to take alternate routes.
The chemical smell, described as similar to burning plastic or hydrocarbons, has been reported to be coming from the La Cangrejera Petrochemical Complex. However, Pemex denies this after a meeting with local residents and their representative, Karina Cobos. The white toxic cloud has spread its odor to nearby towns, including Ixhuatlán, and is now being felt in Coatzacoalcos.
The blockade was warned about by residents for days, who claim they have been asking authorities for help without success. With the threat of a permanent closure looming, Delegate Karina Cobos stated that the road will remain blocked until authorities find a solution to the environmental problem.
The toxic fog has already left at least seven people with health problems, including dizziness, vomiting, and headaches, with children hospitalized due to nosebleeds. Representatives of surrounding companies claim they are not responsible for the chemical smell, leaving residents frustrated and desperate for a resolution.
As the situation continues to unfold, traffic chaos persists in the area, with Tabasco residents and public transportation companies forced to navigate through congested roads to access or exit the port via the Coatzacoalcos I Bridge. The community remains vigilant, demanding action from authorities to address this environmental issue and restore normalcy to their daily lives.
The closure of the highway has significant implications for those relying on it, particularly for work purposes. With the blockade showing no signs of easing, residents are left wondering when they will be able to breathe easy again.
