A low-pressure zone with the potential for cyclonic development is being monitored by the National Meteorological Service (SMN). This zone will cause very heavy rains in Oaxaca and Chiapas, where rainfall between 150 and 200 mm is forecast.
The SMN forecasts that the low-pressure zone located south-southwest of Oaxaca will become a tropical cyclone over the weekend. If confirmed, the name Sonia will be assigned.
This low-pressure zone is driving significant moisture inflows that will cause very heavy rains in eastern and southeastern Guerrero, as well as in the south and coasts of both Oaxaca and Chiapas.
Meanwhile, the forecast specifies that heavy rains are expected over Veracruz—specifically in the Papaloapan, Los Tuxtlas, and Olmeca regions—and in western Tabasco.
At the same time, the movement of tropical wave number 38 south of the Yucatán Peninsula will bring very heavy rains to areas of northeastern Yucatán and northern and eastern Quintana Roo, as well as heavy rains to southern and southeastern Campeche.
Central and northern Mexico will also experience effects from low-pressure channels and the influx of moisture from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, combined with atmospheric instability.
This will result in heavy rains in northern and western Durango, southern Sinaloa, northern and coastal Nayarit, coastal Jalisco, northern and coastal Colima, and coastal Michoacán.
Additionally, showers are expected in central and southwestern Mexico State, as well as in Mexico City, northern and western Morelos, and regions of Puebla such as Tehuacán-Sierra Negra and Valle de Atlixco-Matamoros, in addition to isolated rains in Zacatecas, Querétaro, Hidalgo, and Tlaxcala.
Frontal System 7 will make its presence felt along the northwestern border, reinforced by the subtropical jet stream and an upper-level trough, along with a dry line over the north, generating heavy rains in southern Chihuahua and wind gusts of 40 to 60 km/h in the Gulf of California, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango.
The northeast will also bring isolated rains in Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and San Luis Potosí. All of this precipitation could be accompanied by lightning and hail.
Weather for Friday, October 17
For Friday, a cold to very cold environment is forecast at dawn, with possible frost in the northwestern, northern, and central states.
The renewed influx of moisture from the Pacific, associated with low pressure over the South Pacific, will favor very heavy rains in Guerrero and Oaxaca, with persistent high waves along the Oaxacan coast.
Cold Front No. Hurricane No. 7 will continue its movement near the northern border, bringing lower temperatures, gusty winds, rain, and showers across the border.
During the afternoon, this front will migrate toward the southern United States, while the formation of a dry line over the northern United States could lead to whirlwinds in Chihuahua and Coahuila.
