Francisco Baldelamar Vicencio, a delegate for the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) in Tamiahua, Veracruz, was shot to death on Sunday night while traveling to his home along the Tuxpan-Tamiahua highway.
According to local reports, the 59-year-old union leader was intercepted by armed individuals near the “El 70” ranch, where the assailants opened fire directly on him. The victim died at the scene due to the severity of his wounds.
In addition to his union activities, Baldelamar Vicencio was known in northern Veracruz as a public accountant, a transport business owner, and a political operator. During the 2026 electoral process, he sought the Morena party’s nomination to run for mayor of Tamiahua.
Following confirmation of the killing, the foundation he presided over expressed its condolences via social media and highlighted his track record as a social leader and advocate for various community causes.
“We are not only losing our leader; we are losing a friend, a guide, and an extraordinary human being whose legacy will remain forever etched in memory,” the organization stated in a farewell message.
As of now, state authorities have not reported any arrests in connection with the crime, nor have they disclosed potential lines of investigation. No official statement has been issued by the Veracruz government either.
The murder takes place amidst a climate of political violence affecting various public and social figures across different regions of the country; consequently, the State Attorney General’s Office is expected to take charge of and intensify the investigation to clarify the facts.
