66 beaches in Mexico have Blue Flag Designations

The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico, Miguel Torruco, in a video conference led the Second Meeting of the Blue Flag National Jury. 

Joaquín Arturo Díaz Ríos, executive director of the Foundation for Environmental Education, FEE, Mexico, participated in the meeting, which exclusively holds the license to operate four programs nationwide: Blue Flag, Eco-Schools, Green Key and Learning About Forest.

In his message, the head of Sectur affirmed that the Blue Flag International Badge is awarded annually to beaches and marinas, thanks to the hard work of all involved, which in the 2019-2020 season led Mexico to be in the first position of the American continent with more Blue Flag beaches and in the 13th place worldwide.

“In this sense, and given the situation, we are experiencing, safety, quality and hygiene take center stage, and initiatives such as the Blue Flag certification allow us to strengthen the image of Mexico worldwide,” he said.

For the 2020-2021 season, the candidates were evaluated by a National Jury made up of the Secretariats of Tourism, Health, Environment, Communications, the Navy, and organizations such as Cofepris, Profepa, Conagua, Fonatur, Mexican Center for Environmental Law, Free Access AC, and the Concanaco-Servytur. 

Secretary Torruco reported that of the nominations submitted, 63 beaches of 66 applicants, three marinas, and 25 sustainable tourism vessels, met the requirements to hold the Blue Flag Distinctive.

Today, June 10, 2020, this Blue Flag National Jury learned about the results of the candidacies that the International Jury analyzed and voted on. The sites that will hold the Blue Flag Distinction will be able to officially do so from July 1 next, for public information purposes, which is the date on which the Blue Flag Season traditionally begins, ‘said Torruco.

Yucatan

The ten beaches that are now added to this list are located: three in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur; two in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero; two in Puerto Progreso, Yucatan; and one in Tulum, Quintana Roo; Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas; and Puerto Peñasco, Sonora.

As for marinas, the Distinctive was renewed to two in Nayarit and one in BCS; while 25 sustainable tourism vessels were awarded in Benito Juárez, Quintana Roo.
