During their activity, they asked for respect and tolerance; however, a man who passed by on his bicycle insulted them.

Within the framework of the international fight against LGBTIphobia, members of this sector went out to Madero de Orizaba Street to talk with people and sensitize them about the respect and tolerance that there should be towards those who have different sexual preferences.

Carolina Vázquez Déctor, president of the Orizaba Equality Collective, explained that this date is celebrated because on a day like today, but in 1990, homosexuality was eradicated from the list of mental illnesses and the UN set this date as something special for the LGBT community.

He pointed out that it is undeniable that discrimination and homophobia continue within society, therefore, it is that through activities such as the one on this day, they seek to sensitize people and achieve a tolerant and united society, and those who have other preferences they can go out without fear of being attacked.

“Thanks to these kinds of activities and the marches we’ve been doing for the past nine years, the progress has been notorious. If you realize, most of the members of the community are 20-year-olds who feel free to come out of the closet without fear and with the support of their families,” she said.

The president of the Orizaba Equality Collective mentioned that this part was more difficult for those who are a little older, since machismo predominated in their homes and even the authorities themselves put them in police patrols for going holding hands and now it is no longer like that, so all they have done has not been in vain.

She mentioned that it may seem like a “small” activity, but it is very significant for what it represents.

Despite this, there was no shortage of a man who passed by on a bicycle shouting an insult at them, also, a girl commented that her best friend was the victim of a hate crime.
