The president of Canaco Xalapa, Carlos Arturo Luna Gómez, says that the landslide on the highway to Puebla, at the height of the Maltrata peaks, revealed the lack of road infrastructure in the state.

“There are other alternative routes in Veracruz, what is happening? The road infrastructure must be improved throughout the state so that it is not something that stops commerce in general,” he said.

In an interview, the businessman recognizes that there will be significant economic losses with the partial closure of this communication route.

A risk, destroyed roads in Veracruz generate accidents and economic losses

“Economic losses are already being incurred, perishable foods and many products that must be preserved are transported, this situation was not foreseen and what is happening here is that the businessmen are having losses, surely when it is repaired we will know the total amount of the economic losses.”

He mentions that, although it is necessary to generate the pertinent rehabilitation actions, the safety of the workers who are in the area must be considered, removing the avalanche of earth and stone that covered the road, and doing a quality job.

“It has to be repaired in the shortest possible time, but the safety of the workers must also be considered, we believe that Capufe must do its job as it should and it must take as long as necessary, but attending to the needs of the businessmen,” he explains.

He says that to date there are no reports from truck drivers about unsafe events that have been recorded in the area due to this situation that arose.

“We have not had any reports so far from our colleagues, presidents of the state’s business chambers.”

How did the landslide occur in the Maltrata peaks?

On October 26, a landslide of earth, rocks and trees was recorded on kilometer 230 of the Acultzingo-Ciudad Mendoza highway, leaving approximately one kilometer in the area of the Maltrata peaks completely covered.

After that, on November 1, Caminos y Puentes Federales (Capufe) confirmed the discovery of four tractor-trailers and two sedan vehicles, which were buried due to the landslide of the hill, in which, although at the time it occurred, no damage or human losses were reported.

Capufe said that it is working in coordination with the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SCIT), in addition to the National Guard (GN) to put into operation a 15-kilometer detour in the direction of Puebla-Veracruz.
