The state of Veracruz is distinguished at a national level for its rural vocation and the quality of its products from the countryside. It is not for nothing that former governor Agustín Acosta Lagunes boasted that the state of Veracruz was the nation’s granary and anvil. Among its agricultural production, some products stand out more than others and are even part of the culture of municipalities and even entire regions, as is the case of pineapple.
Although the central coastal region and the plain that extends from the center to the south of the state have large pineapple fields that are characteristic of the landscape on the side of the roads, there is a municipality that stands out above the others for its pineapple production, which is the main economic activity of the place.
We are talking about the municipality of Juan Rodríguez Clara, which is number 1 in pineapple production in the state of Veracruz and at the national level, according to data from the 2022 Agricultural Census prepared by INEGI. This municipality is located in the southern part of the state, in the Papaloapan region, and has about 38,367 inhabitants.
According to INEGI, in the municipality of Juan Rodríguez Clara the surface area of pineapple planted is 9,361.29 hectares, the most important within the pineapple areas of the country. However, it is not only quantity, but also quality, since it is a product that is very recognized and that is sent to other states of the country and even abroad.

With 27,728.79 hectares of pineapple cultivation, the state of Veracruz is the king of this product at the national level, surpassing Oaxaca, Nayarit and Tabasco, which are also located with states with a long tradition in the production of this product.
