Women join forces to preserve and care for the El Encanto lagoon in Veracruz

In order to rescue the El Encanto lagoon in the city of Veracruz, women from civil society organized to do conservation and care work on the site.

During a tour conducted by state government authorities and citizens of the El Coyol subdivision, in the western part of Veracruz, Beatriz Solís Rincón, founder of the community program “Women Restoring the Ecosystem,” announced that they intend to make alliances from the community with the three levels of government to carry out the restoration of this body of water.

She said that a work program was integrated with ten subprograms established in the conservation manual of this mirror, when it was declared a protected natural area.

“In fact, a body of water is a type of wetland, it is a component of an extensive wetland that has been impacted, fragmented and that we are going to work through the reconnection of wetlands. We have been working for three years with documentaries and with access to information from the three levels of government,” she explained.

Resources to rescue and conserve lagoons in Veracruz never arrived
The restoration will be done with own resources, because although the government of Cuitláhuac García Jiménez announced a resource of more than 30 million pesos for programs to rescue and conserve lagoons, the money did not reach this area.

The activist pointed out that after the impact that the Encanto lagoon presents due to the meteorological conditions that affect it, it is necessary to modify the polygonal, the concrete and the grass. These works are projected to be carried out in two years.

“It will be with the activists’ own resources, everything will be our work, because if we want to recover our wetlands it will be from the community. The new governance in the issue of environmental justice says from the community to the government and that is what we are doing by creating alliances with the three levels and everyone who wants to get involved,” she said.

The group “Women Restoring the Ecosystem” is made up of 70 citizens, who according to her will be focused on working because she accused that many neighbors who go to the place throw garbage, burn leaves that damage the species.

It should be noted that although the head of the State Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection, Ángel Carrizalez López, was present at the event, he refused to give information about the programs and preferred to flee the place.
