Search Continues for Missing Veracruz Journalist Roxana Guzmán

XALAPA, VERACRUZ, Mexico — Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García confirmed on Thursday that massive search operations remain underway to locate missing independent journalist Roxana Berenice Guzmán Ramírez, who was violently abducted from her home earlier this week.

Nahle strictly desmintió regional social media rumors claiming that the reporter had been found dead or severely injured in a ravine in neighboring Coatzacoalcos. The governor urged the public and media outlets to act responsibly and wait for verified updates exclusively provided by the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

Guzmán, the founder and director of the digital portal Pulso Informativo del Sureste, was taken by force around 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, from her residence in Nanchital. A harrowing video captured the moments an armed, masked commando smashed down her front door with a sledgehammer. During the assault, the journalist’s father was severely beaten and handcuffed as he tried to protect his daughter.

“Federal and local security forces have been searching for her from the very first moment without pause,” Nahle stated. She added that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has deployed special federal reinforcement teams to assist state investigators.

The high-profile kidnapping has drawn fierce international condemnation from free-press advocacy groups, including Artículo 19 and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Activists are demanding that local prosecutors establish Guzmán’s journalistic work as the primary line of investigation.

Veracruz has historically ranked among the most lethal and high-risk states for members of the press in Mexico. Records indicate that Guzmán had previously fled Veracruz in 2017 due to security threats following the murder of her husband, returning in late 2025 to launch her current news outlet.
