The state of Veracruz recorded the highest crude general mortality rate in Mexico during 2025, with an estimated 730 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to preliminary data from INEGI. However, when the figure is adjusted for age, the standardized mortality rate remains above the national average but no longer places Veracruz in first place nationwide.
Heart disease and diabetes mellitus were the leading causes of death among Veracruz residents during 2025, according to preliminary figures from the Registered Death Statistics of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
A total of 78,401 deaths among Veracruz residents were recorded during the previous year.
The state’s mortality figures are directly related to chronic health conditions.
Heart disease ranked first, with 15,574 deaths, equivalent to 19.9 percent of the total.
In second place was diabetes mellitus, with 10,207 deaths, representing 13 percent of all registered deaths.
Together, these two diseases accounted for 25,781 deaths, meaning approximately one out of every three deaths among Veracruz residents in 2025.
The third leading cause was malignant tumors, with 6,760 deaths. This was followed by liver diseases, with 3,652 deaths, and cerebrovascular diseases, with 2,671 deaths.
Together, these five causes accounted for 38,864 deaths, equivalent to 49.6 percent of all deaths recorded in Veracruz.
The leading causes of death varied somewhat by sex.
Among women, heart disease ranked first, followed by diabetes mellitus and malignant tumors. Cerebrovascular diseases and liver diseases came next.
Among men, heart disease, diabetes, and malignant tumors also ranked as the leading causes of death. However, liver diseases ranked fourth.
Accidents were the fifth leading cause of death among men, with 1,814 deaths recorded during 2025.
Dengue
The state also ranks among the highest in Mexico in terms of dengue cases and the reporting of confirmed deaths caused by vector-borne diseases, according to epidemiological reports.
Extreme Temperatures
During periods of intense heat, the region has also reported deaths caused by heatstroke, placing the state among those receiving significant federal monitoring for this issue.
