Veracruz experienced a wave of violence that, between murders and clashes, left at least eight people dead and a minor injured over nearly 30 hours at the beginning of this weekend.
The hostilities began this Friday in the absence of Governor Rocío Nahle, who was enjoying four days of vacation in Nuevo León, with the death of federal deputy Zenyazen Escobar García, which has raised a growing number of questions, particularly because more than 35 hours after his body was found, the investigation has shown no progress.
That same day, Friday, September 4, at 8:45 p.m., two officers from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection were killed and another was injured after being attacked with gunfire by members of organized crime in Omealca, in central Veracruz.
Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, explained through his social media accounts that the officers were conducting investigative work in Omealca when they were attacked.
That same Friday, a group of armed men broke into the offices of the Lions Club and opened fire on a couple. The man died instantly, while the woman died several hours later.
Also that day, the disappearance of Miguel Antonio Espinoza Vega, 23, was reported. He was a student at the Veracruz Superior Normal School (ENSV) “Dr. Manuel Suárez Trujillo,” located in Xalapa.
On Wednesday, September 2, the young man was found among the remains of a person discovered dead on the Xalapa-Veracruz highway, but the incident was not made public until today.
However, violence intensified in Veracruz this Saturday following the murder of a man who was reportedly a taxi driver, known as “El Negro Gil.” He was shot to death outside an auto repair shop located in the Adolfo López Mateos neighborhood of Coatzacoalcos, in southern Veracruz.
The body of El Negro Gil was left lying several meters from the former toll booth.
Hours later, a man was murdered and his body was dumped on the side of the Trans-Isthmian Highway, along the stretch between Jáltipan and Acayucan, near the former La Ceiba recreational center.
The man, who remains unidentified as of tonight, was found with gunshot wounds to the head and a threatening message beside his body.
Also this Saturday, in the municipality of Oteapan, armed men killed a man identified as Héctor Osnar Franco Gordillo and injured two people, including a 14-year-old minor named Luis Samuel and Yeni Angélica Torres.
The attack occurred on Athens Street, in the La Cruz neighborhood of Oteapan, although the victims and the deceased lived in the Segundo neighborhood of Cosoleacaque, in southern Veracruz.
