Social organizations and environmental groups have called for a series of demonstrations in the state of Veracruz to demand a broader response to the effects of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which has impacted various communities for weeks.

Under the slogan “Life yes, oil no,” the participating groups seek to highlight the damage to ecosystems, economic activities, and public health, while demanding comprehensive solutions to the environmental damage.

One of the main points of mobilization will be the municipality of Pajapan, in the southern part of the state, considered one of the areas where the impacts began. There, the “March for the Sea and the Lagoon” will take place.

According to the announcement, the gathering is scheduled for Sunday, April 5, at 8:00 a.m. at the town’s central plaza, while the march will begin at 9:00 a.m. The march will proceed through communities such as Batajapan, Tecolapan, and San Juan Volador, concluding around 11:00 a.m. at Playa Linda.

Simultaneously, gatherings have also been scheduled in other parts of the state, including Coatzacoalcos and the Port of Veracruz. In Coatzacoalcos, the meeting point will be at 9:00 a.m. at the Flagpole, from where the group will march to the Monument to the Boy Heroes. Meanwhile, in the Port of Veracruz, the march is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., departing from the Flagpole on Ávila Camacho Boulevard and proceeding to the boardwalk.

Among the organizing groups are Altepee, the Gulf Reef Corridor, and the Bety Cariño Human Rights Center for the Peoples of Southern Veracruz, among other regional groups.

The mobilizations aim to pressure the authorities to strengthen actions to address, contain and repair the damage, as well as to underline the importance of protecting the Gulf as a vital space for coastal communities.
